A former sea captain is now concerned about his home. The Port Authority of the City of Vienna wants to remove its museum boats.
At river kilometer 1923.8, right next to the Peace Pagoda on the right bank of the Danube, lies probably the city’s most unknown museum: the Vienna Naval Museum. It is managed by Captain Walter Scheriau (70). He has lived there for more than two decades and is the only Austrian with a registration form on the water. As a captain he sailed all the world’s seas. Now he wants to enjoy his retirement here and bring interested parties closer to the shipping industry of the past.
Captain and ten boats must go
But his days on the Danube are numbered. If it’s on the harbor of Vienna, he and his ten boats must leave now. The retired sea captain is desperate: “Where should I go then?” He invested almost 60,000 euros in the discarded boats and also operates the last bicycle ferry in Vienna.
In response to a question from “Krone”, the Port of Vienna confirmed the plans: “The ships are currently illegally parked – with no existing contract – on property of the Republic of Austria. So the ships must be deported.” It is not yet clear when the ships will have to be removed.
