Major fraud with test stickers: a mechanic from Graz declared “rolling bombs” roadworthy in exchange for cash. Police have discovered more than 250 cases so far.
The fraud group of the criminal department of the police command of the city of Graz has been investigating for a year. As of 2016, a mechanic is said to have issued a courtesy report. The particularly reprehensible thing about it: it approved the roadworthiness test of vehicles that actually went to the scrap heap.
“The brakes were worn out or not at all, wheel bearings were broken or axle beams were rusted through,” explains department inspector Daniela Heiland. In one case, the driver’s seat wasn’t even bolted on!
30 to 50 euros per sticker
“The suspect explained to us that he was counting on the car owners to have the defects repaired.” So far, there have been more than 250 illegal reports. The 46-year-old received 30 to 50 euros per sticker.
Nine henchmen, drugs, weapons
Due to his confession, the mechanic is free. Four customer brokers or scrap car salesmen are stuck. Police also found 720 grams of cocaine and a machine gun on one of the ten accomplices.
