Because of the flood disaster – ten years after an attempted murder: Malala visits her homeland

Date:

Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai has returned to her native Pakistan, ten years after the Taliban attempted to kill her. Yousafzai wants to “keep international attention to the floods” in her home country and emphasize the need for humanitarian aid, her foundation said Tuesday. To do this, she wanted to meet flood victims.

Yousafzai was 15 when the Pakistani Taliban – a group that shares the same ideology as Afghan officials – shot her in the head over their campaign for girls’ education. The attack on her was committed on October 9, 2021. At the time, she was taken to a clinic in Britain, where she survived.

Eight million inhabitants homeless after disaster
Yousafzai wanted to travel to areas particularly hard hit by the monsoon rains. A third of Pakistani territory was inundated by the rain, leaving eight million people homeless. The damage amounted to an estimated 29 billion euros.

Yousafzai grew up in the town of Mingora in the ultra-conservative Swat Valley, near the border with Afghanistan. It was the second time she visited her native Pakistan after the attack ten years ago. In 2014 she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
