Jailed anarchist – policeman injured in protests in Rome

Date:

There were protests in Rome last weekend for the release of an imprisoned anarchist. A small group threw bottles and smoke bombs, lightly injuring a police officer.

The demonstrators tried to break through a cordon set up by the security forces. Although pushed back, they threw bottles and smoke bombs. A police officer was slightly injured and a protester was arrested.

100 days on hunger strike
There were also protests in Turin and Trieste on Saturday. The participants demanded the release of imprisoned anarchist Alfredo Cospito, who has been on hunger strike for about 100 days. The 55-year-old is being held in a Sardinian prison for a 2006 bombing of a police academy and a 2012 shooting of a manager. Because the government classifies him as a dangerous terrorist, conditions in his prison are extremely harsh. These are usually intended for top gangsters like Messina Denaro. Cospito is therefore on hunger strike. Anarchists across Europe are calling for his release.

There are fears of further protests
There are fears of further protests, both in Italy and abroad. The first attacks have already happened. In Berlin, unknown persons set fire to the car of an embassy employee on Friday, the police confirm. The owner is an employee of the Italian embassy. No one was injured in the incident. In Barcelona, windows were smashed at the Italian Consulate General and a wall in the entrance area was smeared. No one was injured there either. The police assume an anarchist act.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said in a statement that her government is “closely monitoring these new cases of violence against our officials and diplomatic missions”.
