The cabinet of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this morning announced six measures against the Palestinians “to combat terrorism and to make terrorists and those who support them pay a price for it”.
The Israeli security cabinet this morning released a series of measures against the Palestiniansin response to a series of attacks this weekendincluding the withdrawal of benefits for families of attackers and a plans to deport them.
The cabinet decisions follow a major attack on an Israeli settlement in occupied East Jerusalem on Friday night seven Israelis died and which represents the deadliest Palestinian attack since 2008.
“The security cabinet has taken a series of decisions to fight terrorism and make terrorists and their supporters pay a price for it,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said in a statement.
have announced six measuresincluding “the withdrawal of social security rights and supplementary benefits from the relatives of terrorists who support terrorism” and the “streamlining and expanding the licensing of firearmsfor civilians.
In addition, the statement announced a plan to “legally mandate the revocation of Israeli identity cards from families of terrorists who support terrorism“, an initiative that has already been promoted by the far-right members of the Executive and is expected to be discussed at the cabinet meeting next Sunday.
While details of such a proposal have not yet been released, the measure would apply to Palestinians living in occupied East Jerusalem with Israeli residence permits who would be forced to settle in the occupied West Bank.
The remaining measures announced by the cabinet are becoming the decision demolish the family home of the Palestinian responsible for Friday’s attack as quickly as possiblethe reinforcement of both military and police forces in various places and the “fortification” of Jewish settlements in the West Bank.
In the month of January, violence claimed the lives of 32 Palestinians and 7 Israelis.
This weekend’s surge was triggered by an Israeli military strike on Thursday in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin, which killed nine Palestinians – including several militants – and was followed by rocket fire from the Gaza Strip.
