National demonstrations continue in Iran. Hundreds of people have been arrested so far. The call to participate in the protests could also have the same effect. The daughter of former Iranian President Ali Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani (1989 to 1997) found out.
Faezeh Hashemi, 59, is a former MP and women’s rights activist. Because of her activities, she has been targeted by the Iranian judiciary several times. Hashemi, for example, was charged in July with alleged propaganda against the Islamic Republic and blasphemy on the internet. She had previously been banned from online activities.
At the end of September, the police finally arrested the women’s rights activist. According to media reports, Hashemi called on people to join the demonstrations following the death of Kurdish woman Zhina “Masha” Amini. The 22-year-old Amini was arrested in mid-September by the moral police for allegedly wearing the Islamic headscarf according to strict rules. She collapsed at the police station and was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead three days later. The autopsy would have revealed a pre-existing condition – something the parents deny.
Dozens dead
Dozens of people have been killed in protests across the country in recent weeks. According to official Iranian information, this is 18 security forces. Hundreds of protesters were arrested. Where the protests were initially directed against the strict dress code, the entire system in the country is now being questioned.
Other impacts include massive internet restrictions, damaged banks and reduced store hours.
