NASA said on Tuesday that the impact of his dart ship against the surface of the asteroid Dimorphos, located about 11 million kilometers from Earth, managed to reroute its orbit, as did its target.
The administrator of the American space agency, bill nelsonhas pointed out that before the impact, Dimorphos took 11 hours and 55 minutes to orbit another larger asteroid called Didymos, forming a so-called double asteroid system.
The ship managed to shorten that orbit by 32 minutes: “It would have been a success if it had shortened it by only about 10 minutes, but in fact it reduced it by 32 minutes and changed orbits”, he said, congratulating himself on the outcome of that planetary defense mission conducted in September.
Dimorphos’ orbit has now moved about ten meters closer to Didymos and the resulting change in its orbit is permanent.
