Acute kidney failure – India stops production of cough syrup – children dead

Date:

Dozens of children may have died in the Gambia from infected coughs and cold syrups – now the Indian manufacturer is said to stop production. This has been ordered by the regional government in the Indian state of Haryana, where Maiden Pharmaceuticals Limited is located, the Indian news agency ANI reported on Wednesday.

Accordingly, local health minister Anil Vij said that during an inspection at the production facility, several deficiencies were found. In addition, samples of cough syrup are currently being evaluated in a lab. According to the authorities and the company, the drugs in question have only been delivered to The Gambia.

Victims were younger than five years
The World Health Organization (WHO) warned about the funds last week. According to the WHO, the cough and cold syrups sold in The Gambia are suspected of causing acute kidney failure and causing the death of more than 60 children. The Gambian health authorities also called for no more prescribing of the suspected juices. According to them, the children with kidney failure were younger than five years old.

According to the Gambian police, 50,000 bottles of the suspected contaminated drugs have been brought into the country. A large part of it, about 41,500 products, was seized by the health authorities. India is known as the pharmacy of the world and produces many medicines cheaply, especially for poorer countries.
