Fled after buying a car – “Blind” fraudster scammed 230,000 euros

Date:

Investigators at the Gaweinstal police station were blown away when they discovered a particularly brazen social scammer. A 46-year-old from the Mistelbach district of Lower Austria feigned visual impairment for years – and bought several cars.

Last year he would have registered three cars in the name of an acquaintance with a disability within a month by forging documents in order to save several hundred euros in motor vehicle tax. The suspect also withdrew a three-digit amount from another person, but the man did not pay the promised consideration.

Hundreds of thousands of euros have been scammed
However, these allegations turned out to be only the tip of the criminal iceberg: after a complaint, law enforcement officials in the course of their meticulous investigations came to the conclusion that the “gasoline brother” had accumulated at least 230,000 euros in social benefits between March 2015 and February 2023 – and that by all his blindness!

But the man had only faked his visual impairment, a medical report revealed. “The damage that was averted or prevented based on the results of the investigation was estimated by the pension insurer at more than one million euros,” said the police. The suspect has been reported to the public prosecutor’s office.
