Viennese city councilor Peter Hacker (SPÖ) wants to raise the minimum income – the opposition rages and speaks of “social romantic dreams”.
“Of course it should be increased,” says alderman for Social Affairs Peter Hacker in an interview with “Krone”. “If we now increase it by 5.8 percent and salaries all increase by 10 percent, then it is clear that the 5 percent increase was too low.” Background of the conversation: Why should a cleaner have to get up every morning if he only draws a few hundred euros more than someone on minimum income.
Minimal security as bridging aid
Of course, the FPÖ and ÖVP do not like the increase plans of the city council. “That is not convenient,” says ÖVP boss Karl Mahrer. “Of course there must be a social network that helps those in need. The minimum income should be a bridging tool, but not a permanent hammock, as is currently the case in Vienna,” adds social spokeswoman Ingrid Korosec.
The FPÖ is also not afraid of criticism: “Vienna spends more than 400 million euros annually on minimum security for people who do not have Austrian nationality. Apparently, according to Hacker’s socio-romantic plans, this is still not enough,” says blue social spokesman Wolfgang Seidl. He sees it as a “new invitation to illegal smugglers and immigrants to ‘escape’ here to Vienna.
