A 53-year-old caused a fatal traffic accident in Tyrol with his mailbox on Monday due to microsleep. But the man was fortunate in adversity. Bystanders also probably put themselves in danger without realizing it.
“It could have been difficult,” fire chief Markus Ralser emphasizes after a spectacular accident on Monday afternoon on the B170 near Brixen im Thale. A 53-year-old was believed to have fallen asleep at the wheel of his mail truck, left the road and crashed into an overhead line pole on the adjacent railway line.
“Incredible good luck”
There was extensive damage to the mast, but the steering wheel was unscathed. “The postal worker was incredibly lucky to be able to leave the scene unscathed,” said operations manager Ralser, who had to cordon off a large area with his comrades and had to deal with onlookers.
“They were apparently not aware that they were in the danger zone via the so-called tension funnel,” said the commander. But in the end everything turned out fine.
