NATO urgently needs to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses

Date:

The Atlantic Alliance recognizes that aid to Kiev has emptied its arsenals and needs to replenish its military equipment

The intensification of Russian aggression in Ukraine in recent weeks has made the NATO defense ministers’ meeting a “decisive” meeting for the security of allied countries. The illegal annexations of the occupied territories, the nuclear threats and the mobilization of tens of thousands of troops represent “the worst escalation since the start of the war,” said Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

Faced with this situation, the Atlantic Alliance is “ready” to strengthen and maintain its support for Ukraine “for as long as necessary”. Some allied countries, such as Germany, have recently announced the shipment of air defense systems to Kiev. NATO supports these initiatives and recognizes the importance of these systems in preventing “the horrific and indiscriminate attacks on civilians” that Moscow is carrying out.

Russian attacks are also targeting energy infrastructure, a “serious threat” to the winter. “All of this shows the urgency to send more air defenses to Ukraine,” said Stoltenberg, who defended the need to provide different types of systems: short and long range, anti-missile systems and drones, to protect Ukrainian cities.

The Alliance is also strengthening its own defenses and plans to resupply its military equipment, such as ammunition and weapons, much of which has been sent to support the Ukrainian military. “I hope ministers agree on the need to resupply and commit more,” the secretary-general insisted.

Some allied countries have not yet reached NATO’s proposed target of spending 2% of their spending on defense. However, Stoltenberg stressed that the Alliance countries have contributed more than €360,000 million since 2014. “Of course we will continue to work to encourage allies to invest more in defense,” he slipped.

Likewise, the Alliance is confident that it will meet its capability goals and invest more in military production. This would enable the organization to “produce more weapons and more ammunition, which we need to both provide our own deterrence and defense and to continue to provide support to Ukraine.”

And it is that threats of the use of nuclear weapons by Vladimir Putin have heightened the alarm of the organization, which will carry out its annual nuclear evasion maneuvers next week. “There is speculation about the use of these types of weapons in Ukraine and we have made it clear to Russia that this would have serious consequences.”

No nuclear weapons movements from Moscow are currently observed, but NATO takes Russian threats very seriously and “remains vigilant”. As Stoltenberg noted, the Kremlin’s rhetoric is dangerous and reckless.

During his speech to the media, the secretary of the Atlantic Alliance again called on Belarus to stop supporting the Kremlin. “We hope that the Lukashenko regime is no longer complicit in this war,” he said. So far, the country has been used to launch missiles at Ukraine and the Belarusian president “must stop aiding and supporting Russia’s war effort,” he stressed.
