According to NATO circles, Russia’s nuclear threats are primarily intended to prevent alliance states and other countries from directly intervening in the war in Ukraine. Should the government in Moscow actually use nuclear weapons, it would almost certainly result in a “physical reaction” from Ukraine’s allies and possibly NATO itself, according to an insider. The move would have “unprecedented consequences” for Russia.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg considers strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses a priority. The NATO chief said on Wednesday at a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels that it is extremely important that allies supply Ukraine with air defense systems. “The highest priority will be more air defense.”
Civil infrastructure “deliberately attacked”
US Chief of Staff Mark Milley condemned Russia’s recent rocket attacks in Ukraine. “In recent days, Russia has stepped up attacks on civilian infrastructure,” Milley said. “Russia deliberately attacked civilian infrastructure to injure civilians. They targeted the elderly, women and children in Ukraine. Arbitrary and deliberate attacks on civilian targets are a war crime under international rules of war.”
To defend against Russia’s war of aggression, the country needs a wide range of air defense systems, such as against ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones, Stoltenberg stressed.
Belarus as a gathering place
In a speech to Belarus, Stoltenberg called on President Alexander Lukashenko to stop dragging his country into the conflict in Ukraine. He expects that “the Lukashenko regime will stop participating in this conflict”. And he criticized the fact that Belarus was being used as a staging area for air strikes on Ukraine. Lukashenko announced on Monday that he would deploy a joint military intervention force with Russia.
Kremlin: Russia’s victory is NATO’s defeat
Meanwhile, the Kremlin responded Tuesday to statements by Stoltenberg. Stoltenberg’s statement that a Russian victory in Ukraine would mean a defeat for NATO confirms that the alliance is fighting alongside Ukraine, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists in Moscow.
When asked whether Moscow would take action, Peskov replied that Russia “has been taking action since February 24.”
