Several measures are intended to safeguard both shipping and the survival of the Neusiedler See. One of them sucks the mud from the ports. This takes place in Illmitz in Burgenland.
Think big – that’s the state motto when it comes to the water level of Lake Neusiedler See. Until now, the municipalities were responsible for pumping out the sludge from the lake and this happened every few years. See-Management GmbH is now taking on this task and must provide a holistic solution around the lake.
Mud has already been removed in Rust and Mörbisch, now it’s Illmitz’s turn. Here the technical equipment is active in the area of the harbor basin and should make its way to the dock of the boat. “It was sometimes difficult for the boats to get out of the harbor, which should be better by sucking the mud and hopefully also secure next season,” said Mayor Maximilian Köllner.
One million cubic meters of mud
In ten years’ time, a total of one million cubic meters of sludge must be removed from Lake Neusiedler See. At the same time, reed management is also required and the supply of external water is still being planned.
But what the Neusiedler See really needs is rain, rain and more rain. So that it and the paints around it fill with water again. Then all these measures are superfluous.
