EU agrees to punish those responsible for repression in Iran

Police use tear gas to disperse a demonstration in the fourth week of protests that have already left more than 100 dead, 28 of them minors

Iran celebrates four-week protests against the death of Mahsa Amini, the 22-year-old Kurdish woman arrested by the moral police for wearing the veil incorrectly. The population has turned to struggle with demonstrations, factory strikes and student sit-ins. The harsh repression of the Iranian regime has resulted in hundreds of prisoners and about 200 deaths, 28 of them minors. In view of the situation, the European Union has decided to intervene.

The twenty-seven have agreed on sanctions against the officials responsible for the harsh repression against the population, according to diplomatic sources in Brussels on Wednesday. The pact, sealed by the ambassadors, is to be ratified by foreign ministers next Monday. “Our message must be very clear. We must ask for the violence to stop. Women should be able to choose. And we must hold those responsible for the oppression of women to account. The shocking violence against the Iranian people cannot go unanswered,” said Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.

The repression continued today in Iran, in whose capital Tehran, police used tear gas to disperse a protest by lawyers – the industry’s first participation in the movement – according to the Iran Human Rights (IHR) organization. But it doesn’t stop there. Ayatollah government intelligence and security officials visit hospitals and monitor pharmacies looking for injured protesters in order to identify and arrest them. CBS News reported that some injured citizens are avoiding medical treatment for fear of arrest.

Meanwhile, UNICEF has expressed “extreme concern” over the deaths and arrests of children and adolescents. “Our thoughts are with the families of those killed and injured, and we share their pain,” said the entity’s executive director, Catherine Russell, calling for “the protection of all children from all forms of violence and harm. , even during conflict and political events, he also stressed that “violence against children, by anyone and in any context, is indefensible”.

At the moment, of the two hundred fatalities, at least 28 are minors. And hundreds of them have been held, most of them in adult prisons, according to human rights groups. In that sense, Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps deputy commander Ali Fadavi stated that “the average age of those detained in many of the protests is 15 years.” Human rights lawyer Hasan Raisi, for his part, said that “about 300 people between the ages of 12 and 13 and 18 and 19 are in police custody”.
