First space tourist (82) wants to go to the moon

Date:

Dennis Tito, the first space tourist in history, longs for space again – and now wants to orbit the moon. The 82-year-old American entrepreneur announced on Wednesday that he and his wife Akiko had reserved two seats on a future orbit around the moon with SpaceX, the private space company SpaceX of high-tech billionaire Elon Musk.

“Since my first flight into space, I have remained passionate about space and the opportunities it offers for all humanity,” Tito said during a conference call with journalists. “That leads me to this mission.” Tito has not revealed how much he paid for the space flights. However, there are still ten places available. The SpaceX rocket should approach the satellite from Earth to about 200 kilometers.

The trained aerospace engineer and later financial investor was the first space tourist to fly into space in 2001. A Russian “Soyuz” capsule took Tito to the International Space Station. The cost at the time: $20 million.

The start date has not yet been determined
Tito now plans to orbit the moon with SpaceX’s future “Starship” rocket (pictured above during a test launch), which is still under development. The trip to the moon was supposed to take a week, but the exact date has not yet been determined. But it will probably be a few more years before it starts.

Dito won’t be the first “Starship” space tourist, though. For him, a group around the Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa would orbit the moon. He immediately booked all seats on the “dearMoon” mission. This flight is planned for 2023 at the earliest, but should not take place until much later.
