A former police officer has been arrested after eight women were raped in South Africa. In late July, heavily armed assailants attacked a film crew in the village of Krugersdorp near the economic metropolis of Johannesburg, which was shooting a video clip in a disused mine. The attackers raped models between the ages of 19 and 35 and steel wallets, cell phones and jewelry.
The former police officer, where the victims’ belongings were found, recommended the shooting location to the film team, a police spokeswoman told dpa on Thursday. The woman is charged with theft and illegal activities. Seven men have been charged with multiple rapes and violent theft since early August. The case against her is ongoing. Police officers also shot and killed two suspected perpetrators as they tried to escape.
Sexual violence is a major problem in South Africa. According to police statistics, 10,818 people were raped in the first three months of this year alone. However, the police believe that the number of unreported cases is much higher because most cases go unreported.
