China is laying the foundation for the future this weekend. This is also being followed with great interest in Vienna – millions of euros are at stake.
Not only the eyes of world politics are on Beijing these days – Vienna also looks to China. The 20th Communist Party Congress will be the triumphal march of Head of State Xi Jinping. But the giant wobbles. The economy has collapsed and discontent among the population about the zero-covid policy is growing. There are increasing signs that China is abandoning this policy. For the population, this would also mean that the strict travel restrictions will be lifted.
China is considered an important market
This is where Vienna comes into play. Because the Danube metropolis is one of the most popular travel destinations for the Chinese people. In tourism, there would be a great sigh of relief. Until 2019, China was Vienna’s second strongest long-haul market. In 2019 alone, guests from the Far East deposited 33 million euros into the hotel’s coffers. Restaurants and entertainment venues also benefited. Vienna was the third most visited city by Chinese guests in Europe (after Paris and London), accommodation providers’ overnight turnover has grown by more than 700 percent within ten years (to 2019). Then Corona came with travel restrictions.
Airlines position themselves
This could just come to an end now. Two recently announced new (relaunched) flight connections give hope for a revival: China Airlines and EVA Air are flying to Vienna again. Together with the new flight connections from the Arab markets, this could give a huge boost to tourism in Vienna.
