Because of salmonella concerns, the soundtrack to Kinder’s chocolate products has been expanded to include all products made in Belgium, despite their best dates.
Chocolate maker Ferrero said it will stop operating a facility in Arlon, which will only open “government-certified”. Ferrero said he recognized “internal inefficiencies that led to delays in retrieving and sharing information in a timely manner” and said that this “impacted the speed and efficiency of the investigation”.
The extension of the suspension, which includes all domestically manufactured Kinder products from June to today, was announced by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) Friday evening. The previous recall only included products with the best dates through October 7, 2022.
The Financial Services Authority, which continues to investigate cases of salmonella related to Kinder products, said the new update means that not all products, regardless of the previous date, should be consumed. The recall of the same products – Kinder Surprise, Kinder Mini Eggs, Kinder Surprise 100g and Kinder Schokobons – were announced earlier this week.
The UK Health Insurance Agency (UKHSA) said on Wednesday that 63 people in the UK, mostly young children, were known to have contracted a salmonella-related treatment. Most of the victims were under the age of five, the agency added.
Ferrero said he was “deeply sorry” for what happened and apologized to consumers and business partners.
Ferrero said the Arlon plant accounts for approximately 7% of the total volume of Kinder production produced worldwide each year.
The spokesperson added: “Food safety, quality and customer focus have been at the heart of Ferrero since the company was founded.
“This serious event is moving towards the goal we are pursuing and we will take all necessary measures to maintain the full confidence and trust of our clients.
Tina Potter, FSA Incident Officer, said: “Consumers should follow the advice in the latest recall notice, which details all products that may pose a threat.
“We reiterate the importance of a precautionary approach to the Belgian companies and government in their recall and believe they will continue to put customer needs first in any action they take. We continue to work closely with the UK and international partners, including the UK Health and Safety Agency and Food Standards Scotland. To determine how the disease starts and to ensure that all necessary steps are taken to prevent further disease.
The United States Health Services Authority (UKHSA) said salmonellosis symptoms usually go away within a few days, but that these symptoms can be more severe, especially in young children and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, and fever. Anyone who has concerns that they may have salmonellosis should see a doctor or call NHS 111.
