Strong autumn storms caused damage and difficulties in many parts of Greece on Saturday. On the island of Crete, a 50-year-old man was swept by the bodies of water in his car during heavy rain and died, the daily “Kathimerini” reported.
A woman is missing, the state broadcaster ERT reports. On Crete, the region around the port city of Heraklion was particularly hard hit. At least 20 charter flights had to be diverted because the runway at the airport there was flooded.
Storm warning issued
An abrupt change of weather from Friday to Saturday surprised people. The storm is now moving east, according to meteorologists. For the Dodecanese archipelago (including Rhodes, Kasos and Karpathos), the Ministry of Public Protection has sent citizens a severe weather warning via SMS.
