According to British intelligence, Russia apparently also uses improvised vehicle bombs in its offensive war against Ukraine. The Defense Ministry in London said on Thursday that there were reports in June that Russian troops had used aging armored vehicles loaded with tons of explosives as rolling bombs.
It is believed that the crew jumped from the vehicle after takeoff.
Most cases have been reported around Marjinka, near the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk, the defense ministry said in its daily update. The British associate these cases with units from the Russian Republic of Chechnya in the North Caucasus.
The ministry wrote that the cases started after Chechen troops in the area were reinforced. It was also pointed out that the fighters have experience with improvised explosive devices from the Chechen wars of the 1990s.
The Department of Defense believes most of these primed vehicles “almost certainly” exploded before reaching their target due to anti-tank mines and shelling. Nevertheless, these explosives cause extremely powerful explosions that are likely to have a psychological effect on the armed forces.
