Eleven people were killed in a “terrorist attack” on a military training ground in southern Russia’s Belgorod region on Saturday. Two people reportedly opened fire on a group of volunteers who volunteered to fight in Ukraine.
According to Russian news agencies, 15 people were injured in the incident. Two volunteers from an unnamed former Soviet state shot at other soldiers during target practice and were killed by backfire, the AP news agency reported.
Belgorod is located on the border with Ukraine and has repeatedly been the target of attacks believed to come from the neighboring country. A few hours before the incident on the military site, an oil depot in the region caught fire (pictured above).
Hundreds of thousands fled conscription
Russian President Vladimir Putin wants about 300,000 reservists to be called up to hold areas in Ukraine that are still occupied after the defeat of the Russian army. After the partial mobilization announced nearly a month ago, protests erupted in Russia and hundreds of thousands of Russians fled their homeland.
But there was also direct opposition to the mobilization. In late September, a reservist shot the head of a conscription service in the East Siberian city of Ust-Ilimsk, seriously wounding him.
