Deutsch Jahrndorf is one of the many places in Burgenland that are close to the border and have been greatly affected by the refugee situation. A local inspection in the border area.
The town of Deutsch Jahrndorf, with 660 inhabitants, is embedded in a peaceful landscape, just a few kilometers from the borders with Hungary and Slovakia. The area is one of the hotspots for illegal migration. On Saturday alone, 300 refugees were rounded up in the district.
The migrants would either cross the Hungarian border or the Slovakian border – whichever is easier, says Mayor Gerhard Bachmann. There are 30 arrests a day in the community. “Actually, it’s crazy,” says the mayor. The numbers have soared in recent weeks. “The number of unreported cases is probably even higher.” At the moment, a very large number of people from India, Pakistan or Nepal arrive here – economic refugees.
