At two new construction sites in the center of Graz, commuters will soon be sliding impatiently into their car seats. In Elisabethstrasse, a lane will make way for bus traffic, and in Maiffredygasse the tracks will have to be renewed. According to Green Vice Mayor Judith Schwentner, the scheduling conflict could not be avoided due to different responsibilities.
Graz is already known as a traffic capital – now the next bottleneck is forming right in the city center. Elisabethstrasse and Maiffredygasse are being rebuilt almost at the same time. “Car commuters do not understand at all what is happening here in Graz,” says Peter Amreich. As chairman of the Austrian Commuter Initiative, he knows the frustration caused by the many hours lost in traffic jams. He says, “Commuting time is life time.”
