At least 20 people were killed in a bus accident in Colombia on Saturday. According to police, 14 others were injured. Footage on Colombian television showed the bus overturning in the early morning hours (local time) on the famous Panamericana highway in the southwestern Latin American country between Pasto and Cali.
Apparently the bus driver lost control in the fog just after a bend. Authorities say the cause may have been a brake failure. Local media reported that the vehicle nearly fell off a mountainside, but then came to rest on an obstacle.
The rescue work lasted nine hours. The bus had been en route from the port city of Tumaco to Cali.
Serious traffic accidents are more common on the narrow, sometimes unpaved mountain roads in the Andean regions of South American countries. Road conditions are often difficult and buses are not always in good condition.
