More than 15 young wolves have been observed this year in the Waldviertel alone. At the same time, the number of incidents in Lower Austria related to the gray fighters is steadily increasing.
So far, farmers have been most directly affected by the fact that wolves increasingly regard the Waldviertel as their territory. The “Crown” picked up Isegrim’s trail and spoke to an expert about the developments.
Recently, the DNA of two wolves was discovered on the carcasses of cattle in St. Martin, Gmünd district. Now we have to wait for the investigations, says Wolf commissioner Aldin Selimovic.
Two of the four Austrian packs live in the Waldviertel
With the increasing presence of predators in the region, encounters between wolves and humans are increasing. After all, two of the four packs documented in Austria live in the Waldviertel – mainly in the Zwettl district. The one at the Allentsteig military training ground has nine to ten young this year, as photos show. Seven young wolves are attributed to the population in the Gutenbrunn area.
One of them probably got in the way of a car at Martinsberg. This is apparent from the autopsy of the dead specimen, the wolf officer confirms.
“Excursions” to Upper Austria
The gray hunters also roam from the forest to neighboring Mühlviertel. For example, a young she-wolf from the Gutenbrunn pack fell two nights in a row in the wild boar traps near the Upper Austrian town of St. Georgen am Walde.
warning shot fired
There was also an encounter with wolves at the Allentsteig military training ground – a fighter had to fire a shot into the ground before the Isegrim dragged away. “It could be prey or a young animal nearby,” Selimovic suspects.
