In the absence of a week before the approval of the CAV budget project, the Minister of Economy and Finance of the Basque Government, Pedro Azpiazú, has assured that this year’s accounts will focus on “dealing with social inequalities” that have exacerbated the crisis we are experiencing. “We all know that economic crises exacerbate social disparities, and we have focused on that when formulating our government’s social policies,” he said. In this sense, he emphasized that “compared to many European countries, the social gap in the CAV is smaller”.

Interviewed about Euskadi Irratia’s “Faktoria” program, he reiterated the Gasteiz Executive’s will to make broad agreements and emphasized that they have opened the door to budget negotiation. “After raising more money,” he added, the increase will be especially noticeable in the items destined for education and health. The Governing Council will approve the budget project next Tuesday.

The head of the economy of the Basque government has also referred to the tax reform. According to him, “this is not the time to cut taxes” because “there are many policies to tackle and resources to do.” Likewise, he explained that “this is not the time to raise interest rates” as this “would only exacerbate the slowdown”.

When asked about the Basque Country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) data that EUSTAT published today, he replied that “it is expected”, recalling the data provided by the Basque government a few weeks ago: “The growth this year will be about 4.3% and next year 2.1%. That’s our forecast.”

On the other hand, in question of salaries, the consultant has emphasized that both companies and employees show a “highly responsible” attitude in the “agreements that are agreed in different work centers”. While there is no broad consensus on the lease, “yes, agreements are being made to raise wages with great responsibility.”

With regard to the pay of civil servants, he has assured that they have no other way than to comply with the law, so “the increase agreed by the Spanish government must be applied”: “the law says it and we must abide by it. If anyone knows another way, let me know.”

Finally, with regard to the quota, he explained that “the calculation announced by the Spanish government” is “correct”, but that “the reality must nevertheless be carefully analysed”. However, he indicated that the amount that will be allocated to investments is “as usual insufficient”. “There we have a structural problem that needs to be solved.”
