By clinging to the streets, climate activist Martha Krumpeck ended up in jail. But that does not deter her: “As long as the speed reduction does not come, I will continue.”
Martha Krumpeck is the face of the so-called last-generation climate activists. They are best known for getting stuck in early traffic on busy roads. In addition to the annoyance of motorists on their way to work, they also receive an administrative fine of up to 720 euros per act and person.
Hardly free, it sticks again
Because Krumpeck did not pay the accumulated fines, it rained out an alternative prison sentence, which she had to serve in the police detention center on the Rossauer Lände. However, of the actual 42 days, she was only held for 12 days – until Sunday. “My team thought they needed me – and managed to buy me out,” she said in an interview with “Krone”. Her first act after her release: With four other comrades in arms on the ring at the opera in the morning traffic.
“So I was back on duty straight away. The captivity didn’t deter me in the least,” she says. On the contrary: “It was relatively relaxing. Even the food was good, albeit a little on the small side,” said Krumpeck, who went on a 44-day hunger strike to “move” Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) to a conversation on the city street.
“I enjoyed free time”
The only thing she missed was contact with her friends. Visiting hours were only twice a week of half an hour each. “But I enjoyed my free time and had enough study material with me to keep me busy. My normal work schedule is seven days a week from morning to night.”
But she noticed changes after the 12 days in jail. “The police officers are now more competent at removing the glue,” she says. Besides, she will not end her actions. Krumpeck: “If the Republic wants to give me a few days of vacation again, it’s because of me.”
