Thousands of Ukrainian children have been kidnapped and trafficked to Russia since the war began. The evidence is overwhelming; Ukraine has registered about 20,000 names. Nevertheless, a Russian representative has now denied the deportations at the UN.
“The Russian Federation was not involved in the deportation of Ukrainian citizens to its territory,” the Russian representative told the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child in Geneva on Tuesday. Instead, they came to Russia voluntarily.
“Most children came with caregivers”
“About three million residents of Ukraine, including children, have been admitted to the Russian Federation,” said Russian Deputy Minister of Labor and Civil Defense Alexei Vovchenko. “The majority of children came with their family or caregivers. They were placed in emergency shelters or with relatives.” The situation of “more than 5,000 children” is currently being investigated.
The government in Kiev, human rights groups and the international judiciary accuse the Russian regime of repeatedly abducting Ukrainian children and bringing them to Russia in the war of aggression that began in February 2022. Ukrainian authorities have so far identified nearly 20,000 children trafficked to the neighboring country
