The country’s highest administrative court has sentenced the state to millions in fines for bad air in major French cities. The government has done too little to ensure good air quality. Limits for nitrogen dioxide pollution were exceeded between July last year and July 2022, especially around Paris, Lyon and Marseille.
France would therefore have to pay 20 million euros in fines to environmental organizations, according to a statement from the Council of State.
After several environmental organizations went to the Council of State because of the bad air in French cities, the latter had already fined France ten million euros in 2021.
The basis is an EU regulation on air quality. In the coming year, the Council of State wants to re-examine the air quality in France.
