Euskaraz irakurri: Arabako Mahastiak izendapena baimendu du Eusko Jaurlaritzak
The Basque government has authorized the sale of wine under the designation of origin Vineyards of Arabako Mahastiak-Alava, with the publication of the corresponding license in the Official Gazette of the Basque Country (BOPV). It is a temporary authorization, until the definitive one must come from the European Commission.
The so-called temporary national protection will allow the interested wineries to start up and market the wines under the Alava denomination from 2024.
Before marketing, the association of small Rioja Alavesa winemakers ABRA, which has promoted the project, must approve its statutes, which are already at the design stage, and process the entry of the interested wineries. for now, only two weeks of over 200 Rioja Alavesa wineries would have shown interest.
The aim is to sell wines in a differentiated way, separate from the Rioja appellation. It is trying to put it in court and has changed its rules so that vintners cannot be in both appellations at the same time.
