‘Too soon too far’ – Prime Minister Liz Truss apologizes for mistakes

Date:

British Prime Minister Liz Truss has apologized for the turbulence caused by her economic policies. “I want to take responsibility and apologize for the mistakes that have been made,” Truss said in a BBC interview Monday night. Huge tax cuts announced by her government, the financing of which remained unclear, had plunged the British pound and sent interest rates skyrocketing.

The 47-year-old admitted the government had gone “too far and too fast”. Truss was forced to fire her ally and finance minister Kwasi Kwarteng and replace her with veteran pragmatist Jeremy Hunt. On Monday, he announced a 180-degree turn in economic policy — almost nothing left of Truss’ core promise.

Truss: ‘I will lead the party to the next election’
Truss emphasized in the interview that economic stability has been restored. Looking to her political future, the head of government was optimistic: “I will lead the Conservative Party in the next election,” Truss said. In fact, however, it is highly questionable whether it will be able to hold its own politically.

There is even speculation about Johnson’s return
A few weeks after taking office, Truss is already under enormous pressure within the party. Colleagues from the first party are publicly calling for her resignation. The discussion about possible successors or new elections has gained momentum. Ex-treasury secretary Rishi Sunak and Tory faction leader Penny Mordaunt, who defeated Truss in the summer’s race for the Tory presidency, are listed as possible successors. There is even speculation that Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who was ousted in early July, will return.

Mordaunt represented Truss in an hour on the government crisis at the request of the opposition Labor party on Monday. Her justification for the Prime Minister’s absence, who said she was “essential on urgent matters”, was met with laughter by the opposition. Labor leader Keir Starmer scoffed: “I suppose in this Tory government anyone can be prime minister for 15 minutes.”
