Ironically, a Japanese man responsible for protecting cultural heritage accidentally damaged the country’s oldest toilets. The man crashed his car into the door of 15th-century toilets at Tofukuji Temple, police in western Japan’s Kyoto prefecture reported on Tuesday.
The original wooden door was heavily damaged, the interior walls suffered minor damage. The actual latrines are intact. The driver of the accident did not notice when accelerating that he had engaged reverse gear, a police representative told the AFP news agency.
Latrines are considered an important cultural asset
The 30-year-old man is a member of the Kyoto Cultural Heritage Preservation Association. The latrines of the Buddhist temple, two rows of holes in the ground, were formerly used by the monks. Today they are considered important cultural assets.
