For days, Russia has been bombing Ukrainian cities with cruise missiles and kamikaze drones in response to the explosion on President Vladimir Putin’s prestigious bridge to Crimea. The local air defense is under heavy pressure – and is now supported by 100,000 “eyes” in the population.
When the kamikaze drones enter Ukrainian cities, you can’t miss it: with their small petrol engines, Iran’s Shahed 136 missiles create a background noise reminiscent of chainsaws or mopeds. The Ukrainian government is calling on citizens to seek shelter if they hear drones. But many want to take an active role in defending against the planes, which are loaded with up to 40 kilograms of explosives.
