Tears of the happiness of a family turned into tears of incredible sorrow. After her fight against bone cancer, a 13-year-old healed at home from the US state of Missouri. The happy ending only lasted a few days. Because the roof of Jerilynn Brown’s house caught fire and the girl died due to a fireworks missile.
Jerilynn was brought to the First Aid in October 2023 on suspicion of a broken arm. There the doctors had a shock diagnosis for the family: the girl suffered from an osteosarcoma bone cancer. After months of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, Jerilynn was finally released from the children’s clinic at the end of June. Just in time for the celebrations of the American Independence Day, which was celebrated in the small town of Bruckner by a large fireworks.
Fire detectors were not functional
According to the fire brigade of independence, a glowing rest of a rocket landed on the roof terrace of the brown family. This smelly and ignited the dry wooden floorboards until hours later in the early morning when everyone slept in the house. The fire jumped to the roof. Spokesperson Jimmy Walker from Fire Brigade told the FOX5 TV station: “The fire detectors in the house were all not functional. When our fire trucks were on the spot around 5 o’clock, the building already burned.”

Mother Liz Stephens and her daughter were brought to first aid with burns and smoking poisoning. Jerilynn died there, while her stepfather Stephen Miller told Tears, the KMBC station said: “My daughter fought for her bone cancer for a long time and beat him. Her light and beautiful soul has everyone who knew her. Unfortunately she is no longer with us – she is now free.”
Friends of the family built a donation page on the online platform “Gofundme” to collect for the funeral costs: “It breaks our hearts. Jerilynn had her entire life for him again, but in the end it was less than two weeks.”
