North Korea responded to South Korea’s annual military exercises late Tuesday night by firing hundreds of artillery shells, South Korea said. At about 10 p.m. (local time), the North fired about 100 shells into the sea off the west coast and another 150 shells off the east coast, South Korean chiefs of staff said Wednesday. North Korea confirmed this moments later.
The shots are a “serious warning” to South Korea, it said in a statement from the state news agency KCNA. “The enemies must immediately stop the reckless and incendiary provocations.”
South Korea’s defense exercises are scheduled to continue until Saturday. Tensions between the two states have escalated as the north has conducted several missile tests in recent weeks, as well as artillery exercises and the deployment of fighter jets near the border. The North, on the other hand, accused the South Korean military of mounting tensions through military exercises with allies such as the United States and artillery shelling.
