At least eight people were killed in a bomb attack at a prison in Myanmar on Wednesday. The explosions took place in a waiting room for visitors, according to a lawyer who was there at the time.
According to local media reports, the dead include at least three Insein prison staff and five relatives of inmates. There are also 18 injured. The military is on site to investigate the situation, it said.
Prison notorious for torture methods
Insein Prison in the former capital of Yangon (formerly Rangoon) is notorious for its torture methods. It is said that nearly 10,000 people are being held there. In the past, reports of assault, assault, overcrowding and unsanitary conditions had come to light.
Since the military coup in the Southeast Asian country, many political prisoners have also been held there. In late July, the military junta executed four imprisoned pro-democracy activists, including a well-known hip-hop artist.
Military junta rules with an iron fist
Since the coup in early February 2021 and the removal of de facto Prime Minister Aung San Suu Kyi from power, the junta has ruled with an iron fist. The army is cracking down on any resistance. More than 2,360 people have been killed and more than 15,800 arrested, according to the Assistance Association of Political Prisoners (AAPP), a nonprofit organization for political prisoners.
