To protect the climate – the EU wants charging points for electric cars every 60 kilometers

Date:

According to the will of the European Parliament, significantly more charging stations for electric cars must be built to protect the climate. The majority of MPs voted on Wednesday for a charging station to be installed every 60 kilometers on the main roads by 2026. By 2028, there should be hydrogen filling stations every 100 kilometers.

Infrastructure for alternatives to combustion engines urgently needs to be expanded to save the EU’s climate goals, said the responsible rapporteur for the European Parliament, Ismail Ertug (SPD). In the next step, Parliament and EU countries will have to negotiate the final text of the law.

The head of the German Automobile Industry Association (VDA), Hildegard Müller, praised the decision: “During the upcoming trilogue negotiations, the federal government in Brussels should at least support Parliament’s proposals so as not to jeopardize the rapid advance. of electromobility.” The EU should make it mandatory to determine the extent to which political adjustments will be made if individual Member States do not meet the enlargement targets.

Maritime sector to reduce emissions
In addition, sustainable fuels for ships should be promoted. The EU parliament demands that the maritime sector cut its emissions by two percent from 2025 compared to 2020; by 20 percent from 2035 and by 80 percent from 2050. This should be especially true for large ships, which are said to be responsible for 90 percent of CO2 emissions in shipping.
