Dispute fueled – Croatia could train Ukrainian soldiers

Date:

Croatia is ready to train Ukrainian soldiers on its territory. Prime Minister Andrej Plenković said on Wednesday. In addition to Croatia, twelve other countries have also agreed to conduct the training on their territory.

“This is not about Croatia entering the war, nor about the war coming to Croatia. It is about Croatia’s policy within the wider EU activities through the aid mission,” the prime minister said. During the internal war (1991-1995) Croatian soldiers were also trained by foreign trainers. In addition, the country has been supporting Ukraine for months, for example financially, politically and diplomatically.

President could block
Croatian President Zoran Milanović sees it differently: “I do not support this idea because I am not in favor of Croatia becoming more involved in this war than necessary. That means bringing the war to Croatia.” According to media reports, he could block Croatia’s participation, where the constitution provides that the president has a say in such a decision by the parliament. If he is against, a minimum of a two-thirds majority is required, which cannot be achieved without votes from the opposition, but if the chairman votes in favour, a simple majority is sufficient.

Opposition circles have also tended to reject it so far. Croatia should “not push itself to the front rows,” it said. As reported, EU foreign ministers recently decided on a military training mission for Ukraine. Austria supports this, but does not participate in it. Great Britain, for example, has been involved in the training for several months.
