Mama Melina and Papa Severin drove to the hospital with stomachaches with their sunshine Elias (seven months). The doctors couldn’t find anything and sent her home. A month later, the pain became acute again and on June 9, the pediatrician referred Elias to the hospital in Wels. “That’s where the carpet tore from under our feet,” recalls the 26-year-old mother.
The diagnosis: acute myeloid leukemia. “We never expected that. Every child has abdominal pain from time to time,” says Melina. From Wels, the ambulance went directly to the oncology department in Linz.
“Since then, the hospital has become our new home. He’s through the first block of chemo now,” says Melina, who is in the hospital around the clock: “My husband relieves me one or two nights a week so I can get some rest.”
The second chemo block for Elias starts on Thursday. But he definitely needs a stem cell donor. “We need a donor in three to four months. The more registrations, the better.”
