Contract with Pfizer – Corona vaccine: Poland asks for supply stop

Date:

Due to the current corona situation, Poland currently does not want any further deliveries of vaccine doses to Europe. But vaccine manufacturer Pfizer insists on compliance with the contracts and wants money to be transferred even in the event of a supply freeze.

Despite a more stable health situation in European Union countries, Pfizer intends to continue supplying hundreds of millions of vaccine doses to Europe, which is futile, according to a letter from Warsaw published Tuesday and available to the German news agency in Brussels. Most would probably be destroyed because they have a limited shelf life and demand is not great. Despite the best intentions to reach a compromise, Pfizer is unwilling to show flexibility and make realistic suggestions on how to deal with the changed situation. Pfizer’s current proposal calls for fewer doses but requires a cancellation fee of half the price of a dose that has not yet been produced, Polish Health Minister Adam Niedzielski said Tuesday.

The call falls within the Polish election campaign. A new parliament will be elected in Poland in the autumn. The ruling Law and Justice Party (PiS) began an advertising tour of the country in April. Health Minister Niedzielski personally does not belong to the PiS, but is not a party.

Minister calls for ‘solidarity instead of profit’
In his letter to Pfizer shareholders, he nevertheless underlines the ruling party’s foreign policy line: Solidarity focuses on helping neighboring Ukraine, which has been attacked by Russia, and makes great sacrifices to do so. Pfizer should therefore behave similarly morally and prioritize solidarity over profit.
