Two people were injured in an accident with an elderly wrong-way driver on the Westautobahn near St. Florian in Upper Austria on Tuesday evening.
Just before 10 p.m., the 83-year-old German drove his car in the wrong lane on the western autobahn (A1) near St. Florian towards Salzburg. Just before 10 p.m., a driver from Linz (32), who drove correctly, met him there. He couldn’t avoid it anymore. The vehicles collided with each other, the wrong-way driver collided sideways with the Linzer’s car. Both vehicles came to rest in the opposite direction of travel in the third lane. Both were a total loss.
Cause is still unclear
The two drivers were injured in the accident and had to be taken to hospital. During the recovery of the driver and vehicle, the western autobahn was difficult to pass between 21:56 and 23:45. Due to the moderate traffic, there was some traffic disruption. Why the wrong-way driver drove in the wrong direction is still the subject of the police investigation. An alcohol test on the 83-year-old and the 32-year-old was negative.
