Due to damage to Ukraine’s energy network from Russian shelling, the government in Kiev has announced nationwide power cuts for Thursday. Until 10 p.m. local time, citizens should use as little electricity as possible. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian forces destroyed three Ukrainian power plants within 24 hours.
“This is a forced step. But we are all working together on this front,” deputy presidential office Kyrylo Tymoshenko wrote on Telegram.
In addition, electricity in each area will be turned off for up to four hours at different times, according to utility company Ukrenerho. People should charge their cell phones and power banks in the morning, have flashlights, batteries and water ready. The reason for the limitations is a lack of power in the system. “We do not rule out that we will ask for your help more often when the cold starts.”
