If Europe opposes the new denomination, it will force the Rioja Alavesa Winery Association to withdraw the brand, which is in conflict with the Rioja Qualified Denomination of Origin (DOCa).

The Minister of Economic Development, Sustainability and the Environment, Arantxa Tapiahas emphasized the legitimacy of the Designation of Origin (DOC) Viñedos de Álava, Arabako Mahastiak in Basque, and has called for “prudence and respect” for the decisions taken by the Basque governments.
The Official Gazette of the Basque Country (BOPV) published this Tuesday the order to approve this new denomination and grants temporary national protection, a provisional authorization, pending what the European Commission decides in this regard, which is empowered to analyze and, where necessary, approve this new designation. The Government Gazette (BOE) collects this Thursday the order of the Basque Ministry of Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment that approves the designation of origin Viñedos de Álava.
The minister underlined the legitimacy of the wineries represented by the Rioja Alavesa Winery Association (ABRA), which promotes the Viñedos de Álava, to initiate a process of differentiation and from creation of new frames “protected by law for marketing their wines” with this label.
This denomination will be independent of Rioja and the wineries of Rioja Alavesa will be able to live up to that. The minister has assured the “voluntary” with which the wineries of Rioja Alavesa can benefit from the new designation. In that sense, he added that the decision “responds to a decision to formulate models that reflect and recognize the specificities of Rioja Alavesa wine in a market that requires individuality and personality in its products.”
“As the competent regional authority in this matter, the Basque government has acted responsibly and has fulfilled its obligation to initially technically and legally analyze the request of the Rioja Alavesa Winery Association (ABRA) in 2016 regarding the application to institute the Protected Designation of Origin Viñedos de Álava, as well as the subsequent proceedings that have taken place regarding this request,” he assured.
If Europe is against the new name, will force this association to revoke the trademarkagainst which the Rioja Qualified Designation of Origin (DOCa) and the Government of Rioja are opposing.
The Regulatory Council of the DOCa Rioja is studying a legal offensive against this decision and within the Basque government itself there are also differences regarding this issue as one of the partners, the PSE-EE, is committed to distinguishing Rioja wines Alavesa, but under the umbrella of the DOCa Rioja.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, for its part, has insisted that the aim is to remain “unique” in favor of the wine and food sector, betting on initiatives that “multiply and add up”.
