After Truss resigns – British media: Boris Johnson contemplates comeback

Date:

According to British media reports, her predecessor Boris Johnson is considering a comeback after British Prime Minister Liz Truss announced his resignation and plans to run again for the Conservative Party presidency. The conservative wing of the Tories wants a new prime minister in office by the end of October.

Johnson considers the developments a “matter of national concern” and is therefore preparing to proceed, a British Times editor-in-chief wrote on Twitter. Boris Johnson is also expected to become leader of the Conservatives again, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Truss still in function for the time being
Truss announced her resignation on Thursday after just six weeks in office. She will remain Prime Minister until a successor is appointed. Should Johnson become the new party leader, he would also be British Prime Minister.

According to Graham Brady, the chairman of the powerful 1922 Tory faction committee in the British House of Commons, it should be certain by October 31. The week-long internal party election process for Truss’ successor is expected to end next Friday (October 28). Brady said the party’s grassroots should also be involved in the process. What that should look like was initially unclear. “We are well aware of the need in the national interest to get this done very quickly and clearly,” Brady said.

Looking for another week?
Over the summer, the search for a successor to scandal-shocked former Prime Minister Boris Johnson dragged on for weeks. The two candidates – Liz Truss and her rival Rishi Sunak – held campaign rallies across the country after the faction previously named the two finalists in the contest.

This time, ex-treasury secretary Rishi Sunak and cabinet members Penny Mordaunt and Ben Wallace are again considered as possible candidates.
