Sometimes fiction comes very close to reality: In the United States, a writer who wrote an essay titled “How to Kill Your Husband” has been convicted of murdering her husband. After eight hours of deliberation, an Oregon jury on Wednesday found Nancy Crampton Brophy guilty of the murder of her husband.
The writer, who specializes in novels with telling titles like “Hell in the Heart” or “The Wrong Husband,” had denied all charges. She was in financial difficulties, prosecutors said. In June 2018, for example, she killed her husband in the cooking school where he worked as a cook with two shots to the heart to collect his life insurance. She firmly rejected this motive.
According to her own statement, photos from a security camera near the crime scene showed her only that she was looking for inspiration for her books. She bought a missing gun – according to police the murder weapon – as a prop for writing a book.
Length of sentence not yet known
The author was arrested in September 2018 and has been incarcerated ever since. The length of the sentence that the writer will have to serve is not yet known. The lawyers for the 71-year-olds have said they want to appeal, according to the local newspaper The Oregonian.
The essay How to Kill Your Husband is about how a woman can get rid of her husband without being harassed by the courts. The text states that firearms are “noisy, make a mess and require some skill”. But, the essay concludes, “the most important thing to know about murder is that each of us is capable of it if we push ourselves enough.”
