Robotic mowers are popular; they automatically create green lawns, which are a mass grave for conservationists.
Robotic lawnmowers patrol highway parking lots and public green spaces, as well as many private gardens. For weeks people have been driving directly in front of the retail park in Kötschach-Mauthen. Even at night and equipped with mini headlights, the lawn is kept short. The result is a perfectly manicured, lush lawn.
But the price – and that doesn’t mean the purchase price – is high. “Robot mowers are the death of insects and microorganisms,” says Roland Schiegl of ARGE Naturschutz: “Of course these fully automatic lawn mowers are useful, but many are certainly not aware that their green lawn is a mass grave for them.”
Do not always use robotic lawnmowers
Because the robotic lawnmowers are almost always in use. “Nothing can escape them”, says Schiegl: “That is also the important difference with normal lawn mowing, which is usually done every week or two. From a nature point of view, therefore, I can not argue anywhere for the use of robotic lawnmowers. Yet we conservationists do not want to are seen as forerunners who want to deprive people of comfort. If you want to use an automatic mower, you have to program it so that it is not in constant use.”
