Klaudia Tanner in the talk – the military also wants to invest in AI systems

Date:

The first national defense report is available and a new security strategy for Austria must now be developed on the basis of this. Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) makes it clear: “There is one subject that is not suitable for partisan political games and that is military security.” Investments must also be made in artificial intelligence (AI).

Artificial intelligence (AI) is already being used on the battlefield in the war in Ukraine. Austria also wants to get a feel for it, as Klaudia Tanner reveals in an interview with Conny Winiwarter. With the financial resources, the military has been getting better and better lately. Secretary Tanner has already increased the budget three times. “Reducing would be the wrong way to go,” she clarifies.

Confidence in the military increased
“We are not on the island of the blessed,” continued the ÖVP politician. At least since the war in Ukraine, this seems to have reached the general public: confidence in the federal military has increased by 20 percent. “This puts the army in second place behind the police,” says the defense minister happily.

The development plan up to 2032 goes much further than one legislature. It is not certain that the “simple law without a constitutional majority” will apply until 2032. Tanner considers that highly unlikely. “Social security must not be played off against military security,” said the federal minister.

“The subject of security is not suitable for partisan political games”
Security is a good keyword. Because Austria seems to have become somewhat rusty in recent years. A new security doctrine should now replace the current, ten-year-old version. The Federal Chancellery is in charge. Opposition parties criticize that the strategy is being worked out in a ‘secret room’.

The government refused to involve the other parties at an early stage. Tanner: “I see it differently. It was immediately offered and it was established that this important document had to be created with the help and involvement of all parties, of course.” For Tanner, neutrality is non-negotiable.
