A 94-year-old from St. Leonhard/Freisstadt (Upper Austria) cleared spruce trunks from a stream with a winch on Thursday evening. He probably accidentally fell into the water, became entangled in a chain and drowned helplessly.
The 94-year-old from St. Leonhard was busy removing washed-up tree trunks from a stream in his hometown on Thursday around 5:15 p.m. To do this, he attached the wood to chains and pulled it out of the water with a cable winch.
I fell headfirst into the stream
The pensioner may have fallen headfirst into the stream and was found lifeless by his wife. The 90-year-old immediately alerted the emergency services and tried to free her husband and provide first aid.
Difficult recovery
Arriving police officers came to her aid, but the rescue was difficult because the man’s legs were stuck underwater. Together with the crew of the rescue helicopter, the 94-year-old was eventually pulled from the stream, but the emergency doctor could only determine that he was dead.
