The Greek government has offered to supply electricity from renewable energy sources to Germany and Austria. According to his own statement, Energy Minister Kostas Skrekas has proposed that both countries build a new line for this purpose.
It must pass through Albania and other Balkan countries. It is about connecting Greece to Austria and further to southern Germany. The planned line has an initial capacity of three gigawatts, but this can be expanded to nine gigawatts. The first discussions with the Austrian and German governments have already taken place. However, according to Austrian experts, the project is still at a very early stage.
The electricity to be transported via the line comes from renewable energy sources. The Greek government wants to increase its share of renewable energy to 70 percent of electricity consumption by 2030. In addition, the southern European state wants to become an important supplier of solar and wind energy.
Kick-off for underwater cables
Last week, the go-ahead was given for the construction of the EuroAsia Interconnector submarine cable, which will connect the electricity grids of Cyprus and Israel to Greece via the Mediterranean Sea. In 2021, the Greek government signed an agreement with Egypt that would pave the way for a submarine cable to carry electricity from renewable sources to Europe. This is the first such infrastructure in the Mediterranean.
